Flight Sim Wiki

The Rolladen-Schneider LS8 is an sailplane designed and manufactured by Rolladen-Schneider beginning in 1994. It is common for owners to unofficially append "-18" to the designator to indicate the sailplane is configured to be in compliance with the FAI 18 meter class.

The company was placed into receivership in 2001 and acquired by DG Flugzeugbau in 2003, who continues production of the model to the present. Some customers unofficially refer to the later hulls built by DG Flugzeugbau as the "LG8".

Summary[]

The LS8-18 is a single-seat sailplane produced by German aircraft manufacturer DG Aviation. The LS8-18 was developed from the LS6, with aerodynamic improvements including increased wing angle of incidence and the addition of winglets to decrease wingtip vorticular flow and hence induced drag. The LS8-18 took its maiden flight in 1994 and subsequently placed highly in a number of world soaring championships in following years. The aircraft is known among pilots as being well balanced between maximizing performance and ease of handling, making it a great all around soaring craft.

The LS8-18 measures 22 ft 1 in (6.73 m) in length and stands 4 ft 4 in (1.32 m) high. It features a T-tail empennage, a retractable single-wheel for landing, and has the ability to carry up to 414 lb (188 kg) of water ballast. Its wing has a span of 59 ft 7 in (18.16 m), including winglets, and has an aspect ratio of 21.4. It has a maximum speed of 175 mph (152 kn; 282 km/h), a maximum glide ratio of roughly 43:1, and a sink rate of 116 ft/min (35 m/min).

The LS8-18 is a design that has proven itself in some of the most demanding soaring championships throughout the world. Although it is a high performance soaring craft, its forgivingness avails itself to newcomers to test their acumen with ridge, wave, and thermal lift.
